How Truck Drivers can Avoid Hitting Parked Vehicles or Fixed Objects

Hitting parked vehicles or fixed objects is something the professional driving community should take very seriously. It can lead to regret and even time off from work.

Generally, this type of accident is caused by inattention, rushing, lack of visibility, lack of space, or heavy clutter at the site. Many sites where we deliver, like hospitals, scrap yards, and gas bottling docks, have narrow confines and many low visibility hazards.

Tips to Prevent Hitting Parked Vehicles or Fixed Objects

  • Plan your route in advance. Looking at the satellite view of an unfamiliar customer site and locating the unloading station can be extremely helpful.
  • Scan the area before pulling in, if possible. If you can, stop, get out, and look. Walk the area and put out some cones to mark low visibility hazards.
  • Go slow. Give yourself time to react to unexpected circumstances.
  • Maximize visibility. Adjust your mirrors. Use utility lighting in dark areas.
  • Call someone if all else fails. In the case the customer station is blocked or impeded and you can’t access it safely, contact the customer to move equipment or vehicles. If no one is available, contact dispatch for instructions.

Introducing an unstoppable force to an immovable object can lead to consequences detrimental to health, safety, and mental well-being. Slow down, consider the bigger picture, and plan your course of action based on the conditions.
