International Podcast Day

Every year on September 30th, International Podcast Day is celebrated across the globe by podcasters and listeners alike. Podcasts aren't a new thing, really being invented back in 2004. With the industry rapidly growing in the early and mid 2000s, the power of podcasts was quickly realized. Since then, more than 60% of US adults between the ages of 18 and 34 listen to podcasts monthly. According to Insider Intelligence, podcast listeners will increase to 117.8 million by the end of 2021. Podcasts span across the entire world, offering an endless encyclopedia of information on any subject you can think of. In the mid 2010s, a group of podcasters and podcast enthusiasts wanted to dedicate a day to the vastly popular and innovative podcasting industry.

How did it start?

Back in 2013, California resident and podcaster, Steve Lee had the idea to celebrate nationally the power of podcasts. A team of fellow podcasters and Lee brainstormed together and came up with the idea of bringing together podcasters across the United States. In 2014, the first National Podcast Day event was held, where the team of podcasters livestreamed 6 hours allowing fellow podcasters around the country to call in and chat.

Word of the celebration grew and was shared by famous podcasters like Ray Ortega and Dave Jackson, and in 2015, the team launched a rebrand and made the holiday what it is today. Between 2015 and 2020, the International Podcast Day team has successfully hosted livestreaming each year and brought on over 350 podcasters from nearly 100 countries. After 5 years of bringing together podcasters to talk on air, the team will no longer be hosting the livestreaming event. Instead they will be joining the rest of the community and participating in local events and festivals. Today the world hosts festivals and special celebrations in honor of this International holiday.
