Heads Up, Slow Down: Work Zone Awareness Week is Here!
Alright, drivers, it’s that time of year again—National Work Zone Awareness Week (April 21-25, 2025), hosted by North Carolina DOT—when we shine a light on those orange cones, flashing signs, and the brave souls working behind them.
We get it. Work zones can be frustrating. Nobody likes slowing down when they’ve got places to be. But remember, those reduced speed signs aren’t just suggestions, and those lane closures aren’t set up to test your patience. People’s moms, dads, brothers, and sisters are out there keeping the roads safe and smooth for you. Let’s show them some patience and respect.
The Hard Facts
- In 2022, there were 857 fatalities in work zone crashes.
- 80% of those killed weren’t workers—they were drivers and passengers like you.
- Speeding and distracted driving are the top culprits.
What to Do
- Slow down!
- Stay Alert – Put the phone down, quit messing with the radio, and keep your eyes on the road.
- Give them Space – Tailgating in a work zone is a bad idea. That truck ahead of you isn’t going to move faster just because you’re close enough to read their VIN.
- Follow Directions – Those flaggers waving you through know what they’re doing.
Bonus Tip: Be Patient
Nobody loves waiting, but losing a couple of minutes is way better than losing a life. So next time you enter a work zone, take a deep breath, ease up on the pedal, and show a little respect for the folks making the roads better.
This year’s tag, "Respect the zone so we all get home," isn’t just a slogan—it’s the key to making sure we all get home in one piece. Drive safe out there!
